The UIRA often offers programs simultaneously in person and via Zoom. Recordings that have been archived online are listed below, and you may click on any title to view that particular program. Each section lists recordings from a specific UIRA program year, which runs from September to June.

  • Emerging Issues in Immigration Law
    Tuesday, October 14
    Speaker Bram Elias has been the director of the University of Iowa College of Law’s immigration law clinic since 2015. Before joining the clinic, he worked in private practice as an immigration attorney in Iowa City.
     
  • Health Insurance Decisions
    Thursday, October 16
    Sonatina Fernandez, UI Human Resources, discussed UI Health Care enrollment options for retirees, and Kevin Ward, Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselor, highlighted the importance of reviewing health insurance coverage annually, upcoming opportunities to make enrollment changes, and potential considerations in making informed choices. The differences between traditional Medicare with Medigap and prescription drug supplements, and the all-inclusive Medicare Advantage plans were discussed.
     
  • Trends in Children’s Literature
    Monday, November 3
    Angela Pilkington, Children’s Services Coordinator at the Iowa City Public Library, and Molly Roberts, Children’s Bookseller at Prairie Lights bookstore, led a discussion about what’s new, popular, and delightful in children’s literature today. Molly also provided a list of children's books available at Prairie Lights.
     
  • Money Management for Seniors

    Clark Buelt, wealth management advisor with TIAA Financial Services, spoke about financial decisions retirees make, some of the options open to us, and considerations that might influence our choices. He drew on his experience working with university retirees, but his remarks also have a general application.
     
  • Grecian Urns: The Posing Women Behind "The Music Man"
    Wednesday, February 18
    School of Music Professor Marian Wilson Kimber provided the historical background of the Delsarte movement, which promised American women new levels of grace, fitness, and beauty. Her talk was illustrated by photographs of the real posing Iowa women, the predecessors of composer Meredith Willson's fictional creations.
     
  • The Iowa Cancer Registry
    Tuesday, March 24
    Professor Mary Charlton is a faculty member at the College of Public Health and director of the Iowa Cancer Registry. She has focused particular attention on cancer risk and treatment in rural areas and on racial/ethnic disparities in cancer outcomes.
     
  • Using Artificial Intelligence in Medicine
    Tuesday, April 14
    Jason Misurac, MD is Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics–Nephrology, Dialysis, and Transplantation in the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics. He spoke about current and future uses of artificial intelligence in transforming medical practice and patient care.
     
  • History of the Pledge of Allegiance

    Professor Allan W. Vestal, Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the College of Law at Drake University, presented on the history of the Pledge of Allegiance.

    Thursday, October 17
    Sonatina Fernandes, senior UI HR specialist, Rebecca Olson, senior director of Benefits, and Anne Thurston, client consultant with Health Alliance Medical Plans, presented an overview of the 2024-25 UI health care enrollment options available to UI retirees.
     
  • Deaccession and Restitution
    Thursday, November 21
    In 2024 the Stanley Museum of Art became the first museum in North America to return objects in its permanent collection looted by the British from the Benin Kingdom in 1897, directly to the Oba of Benin. Director Lauren Lessing and Curator of African Art Cory Gundlach discussed the ethical, cultural, and practical considerations involved in this project, and what implications they have for other American museums with collections associated with colonial contexts.
