In the beloved Broadway show The Music Man, when con man Harold Hill tells Mrs. Shinn that her every move “bespeaks Delsarte” what does he mean? And when the ladies of River City form a dance troupe, why are they posing as “Grecian urns”? In anticipation of the performance at Hancher, UI School of Music Professor Marian Wilson Kimber will provide the historical background of the Delsarte movement, which promised American women new levels of grace, fitness, and beauty. Her talk will be illustrated by photographs of the real posing Iowa women, the predecessors of composer Meredith Wilson Kimber’s fictional creations.

We hope to see you there!
